Homework activities in first grade are not meant to take up an entire evening. The purpose is for your child to practice previously taught skills, to build confidence and to gain a love for learning. If an activity becomes too frustrating for you and your child, please feel free to talk to me about it. Below are descriptions of homework activities that will be sent in your child's binder. Please contact me if you have any questions. mdumas@mckinnisd.net

We encourage students to ready daily, mainly to instill a love of reading. Daily reading is not meant to be a chore or a regimented time to teach your child to read. It is a time for your child to practice good reading and to hear good reading from you. The goal is to improve and reinforce literacy skills.

Each week, students will come home with reading materials to reinforce previously taught literacy skills. These materials include stories and activities you can do with your child while reading. The activities are a great way to get your child thinking about reading and will help them grow as a reader!

Students will also have a Sight Word & Fluency Phrases booklet in their binder to practice. Students will need to be able to read and write the sight words as well as read the fluency phrases to move on the next list or booklet. Although, your child is growing up in a world of spell check and autocorrect, sight words are some the most basic words in the English language. I consider sight words to be structural words for early communication. Not only will practicing these words help with reading, but it will be visible in your child's writing growth.
